review: goldfrapp - we are glitter
goldfrapp's we are glitter, due out october 17th, will sound different every time you hear it, like when you press a drinking glass up to the wall and listen to your next door neighbor have sex with a different soul every night. i've strayed from the electronica for a good while and this cd consisting solely of remixes brings me back to the fold in style. alison goldfrapp's voice in simultaneous opposition/connection to the music brings an intoxicating dissonance - driving beats, hypnotic vocals, insistent yet gentle. first time/breakup sex all in one.
for the remixerrati among you, those at work include dfa, benny benassi, ewan pearson, c2, françois k and goldfrapp themselves. the multiple remixers are a key reason for the cd's complexity, ensuring each song exists in its own universe. i swear there's an i feel love sample in fly me away (c2 remix 4). everything sounds better with an i feel love sample stuck in. shoulda stuck it in mein kampf. that whole deal would have gone better or at least different.
so we are glitter. you and i are glitter. are we glitter? glitter on elmer's glue on black construction paper in 2nd grade? draw your shape in glue. drop on the rainbow glitter. shake away the excess and reveal beauty on the paper. yet what happens to the excess glitter? is it beauty too? yes. what happens to the billion and first person when there are billions of people? does that one have beauty too? yes. because beauty is in excess.
